Each year on May 28th, Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed to highlight good menstrual hygiene practices and to raise awareness about the importance of access to products. Together with other organisations YADA is working hard to give advice and support to women and girls on this taboo subject. The majority of girls miss school every month because they don’t have the needed materials and women lose precious days of work.
After scrolling through the YADA website, a friend got in touch asking if she could help with this issue. Wonderfully, local Burundian artisans are now making reusable sanitary towels. We got in touch and were able to place an order of 200.
At the same time as gathering the community for distribution of the packs we also carried out a training on the importance of good menstrual hygiene. As you will see from the very happy faces on the photos the women and girls were delighted to receive these sanitary packs. Many have came back to tell us the huge difference these packs have made to their lives and the lives of their daughters. One mama shared “Now we don’t need to dread each month coming and for the first time we can experience dignity not disgust”.
The rising cost of living has affected everyone globally, but most hardest hit is areas like where YADA is working. It has skyrocketed enormously. Without the daily cup of porridge our students and breastfeeding mamas receive, life would be near impossible. Local leaders have been several times over the last month to ask YADA to receive more children and mamas who are in desperate need. The children in the above picture have recently lost their dad and their mama is not working. We have welcomed these children and others. Please pray we would be able to continue this and give to those who so desperately need.
Please join with us in:
1. Thanking God that Ezechiel had a very constructive and fruitful time at our missions conference in Zambia.
2. Praising God that YADA could help 200 women and girls with sanitary packs which enables them to experience dignity not disgust.
3. Thanking God that we can feed extra children and mamas porridge.
Please join with us in prayer;
1. For Gods protection and provision over all that YADA is doing.
2. That God would lead us to the people of peace in Kagwema community (more to come about this soon!)
3. For the rulers and leaders of this country.
